Jennifer Rowley starts the new year in Barcelona, making her highly anticipated role and house debut as the title role of Verdi’s Aida at Gran Teatre del Liceu. Ms. Rowley will star in a new production by Thomas Guthrie, which uses hyper-realist scenery designed in 1945 by the Catalan artist from Manresa, Josep Mestres Cabanes. This splendid creation of the great Catalan school of set design emphasizes the grandeur – and also the intimacy – of Verdi’s third-before-last opera, remaining true to the historicist tradition.
Performances will take place on January 14, 17, 20, 23, 28, 31, and February 2. Jennifer is joined by a spectacular roster of singers including Mariano Buccino as the King, Luciano Ganci as Radamès, Judit Kutasi as Amneris, Marko Mimica as Ramfis, Àngel Òdena as Amonasro, Josep Fadó as a messenger, and Berna Perles as the High Priestess. Gustavo Gimeno conducts the Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of the Liceu Opera Barcelona.
